Sam had a long day in the hospital on Tuesday. For the first time he had anticipatory sickness and we were a few minutes late getting to the hospital, but everyone was more than sympathetic. Rob, one of the hospital pharmacists, who also goes to our church, came by to check in with us. He orders and mixes Sam's doses for chemo. Sam was given the maximum dose of methotrexate, which is rarely done because either the child's body can't tolerate it or their counts are too low. Another miracle from God. We had to stay longer than planned because Sam started reacting to the chemo, so Christine slowed it down and that helped.

Our nurse Christine is a wonderful and a gifted story teller...she keeps us entertained with "life on a farm" stories! Sandra, the child life specialist, helps the day go by faster by providing things for Sam to do in the room. It distracts him when he's playing on the WII, watching a movie or cable t.v. (a treat because we have no reception or cable at home), or putting together models or lego. He studied and I quizzed him for the science test he had to write the next day. After 6 hours he was done, we headed home and he went straight to bed. We have found that if we give the anti naseau medication to him every 8 hours around the clock, for 3-4 days after chemo treatments, he does much better.

Last night our friends, who live a few doors down, couldn't use some tickets they had been given to the Cougars hockey game, so they asked us if we would like to go. Karly had plans, Ger was out of town, so the rest of us went with some friends and we had a GREAT time! Sometimes those spontaneous, very last minute things seem to be just what's needed! A very timely, unexpected treat!

Sam now has a few weeks to let his body recuperate and build his blood counts. He's still attending school, practicing and playing games with his volleyball team, and plans to go trick or treating with his buddy Landon. He is a walking miracle boy! We have much to be thankful for as this is very atypical for this part of a child's protocol. God has been so very gracious and merciful!

Blessings,

Debbie

Hi Goertzen Family,

Just wanted to let you know how much I enjoy your inspiring blog entries. It's been so powerful to read about Sam's journey and keep in touch with your family this way, even though it becomes a little blurry through tears at times. I am reminded about your testimony every time I hear the song "Saviour, He can move the mountains, my God is mighty to save!". We are enveloping your family in prayer.
Love from Donna, Chris, Michael and Josh

Hello Goertzen clan!
Grateful to see how well Sam is doing, we'll keep praying that he keeps responding so well to the treatments, as nasty as they sound. I love to read about his adventures - and seeing you guys enjoy your dog. Dogs are kind of like therapy wrapped in a fur coat.
We are keeping busy - Cam is hopping, very long days - he leaves long before we get up, gets home after we've eaten, most days. Pray for strength for him. He's loving it right now - meeting such interesting people from all over the world working on these huge projects. So home projects not quite on track...! Oh well. I'm working these days, it's good - I'm at home, so call anytime! Bizz has her grad photo appointment for Wednesday morning, hard to believe. We found her grad dress last week - it's totally her, not the typical pouffy prom taffeta/organza-palooza that you see everywhere. Just a beautiful, elegant, purple silk knee length dress from a one-of-a-kind shop downtown, and was amazingly affordable. God is good, even about small details like grad dresses. And big details, like fixing Sam's body. He just is who He is, good - and gracious.
We're reading The Shack as a care group, an interesting way to redefine how we view the cultural constraints we attach to Christianity and our view of God. It is a novel, after all, but good to jolt us out of the pew and dig up what God actually says about Himself, not just the church brochures.
Just thinking about you today, and loving your family.
Heather & Kohl, cuz the rest of 'em are out conquering the world.

Hi Debbie,

I guess Sam is taking a break before his next phase treatment starts. It's so wonderful to read that Sam is able to stay active all these times. We will be going to the clinic tomorrow to have a meeting with the pediatric radiation oncologist and then Friday for chemo. We won't be at the clinic next Friday (Nov 14) but will be back on the 17th & 18th.

Blessings,
Evelyn
