Today Debbie and I went to church at Gracepoint Community MB Church in White Rock. It was a great service. We had a wonderful time of prayer with some elders from the church near the end of the service. It was really great to be in church together. Kate and Sam stayed home.
In the afternoon, we had a visit from my Cousin Donna Hartman and then we drove to the beach and tried out Sam's new wheelchair with our friends the Holliers. It was very fun to walk along the sea wall and get some fresh air. We stopped at a little ice cream shop (Sara's Ice Cream). There was lots of laughter and talk about the fun we had last summer on Kal lake. It was an outstanding afternoon.
Sam is feeling better with the change in anti-nausea drugs. He's still very tired and can't walk very far but he's finding this last treatment easier on his stomach. This week is a blood test on Tuesday and then more chemo treatment on Friday. This will be the first treatment day that I'm going to miss with Sam as I'll be staying in PG for graduation this weekend.
It was so good for us to be together this weekend. I wasn't sure if Kate and I should come down this weekend but in the end we were so glad that we did. The challenges we face are so much easier to face together.
So much to be thankful for this weekend. We're thankful for the great report from the doctors on Friday, the many encouraging words on the blog and in writing, the incredible support we've had from family and friends, colleagues and our school board, the chance to be together these last two weekends, this amazing place to stay in White Rock which meets all of our needs and then some, and the faithfulness of God throughout all these events.
Nothing can separate us from the Love of God...
Good night,
Ger

Hi Sam; Looking at the pictures of you getting your head shaved is making me very nervous!!!! I told the kids at school if they can raise 3,000.00 dollars I will shave my head. Brian got so excited he's putting in $250.00 and my oldest, Matthew is putting in 100.00 and on the first day of collecting money which was Friday we got 110.00, so I'm thinking I should have went a little higher. Maybe $5,000.00! Oh, well, I better starting looking for a hat, or maybe a wig? I'll have lots of company though, cause Mrs. King is doing it with me, and a high school student named David Robertson is going to shave his head too! His hair is so long, that the first section will go to making wigs for cancer patients. Just wanted to let you know what we are doing to help you big guy. Keep fighting and we'll keep praying.
Lots of love and prayers
Rosie
Hi Sam
Hey - Mr. Zral said to me "The only thing you can control in this cancer thing is your hair. Cut it when you're ready" I'm so glad I did it when I was ready. And now i'm glad you did! :)
But now, my hair is growing back, and it's fuzzy... it looks kinda dorky! but my girls are very encouraging!
Hey - guess what? I had my LAST treatment on Wednesday. WooHoo!!! I haven't celebrated yet, as I'm still experiencing some of the side effects. I can't wait to celebrate your last treatment with you.
Here's something to encourage you, Mrs. Belbeck gave it to me while I was in the middle of my treatments. "I will rebuild and not demolish you, and I will plant and not uproot you." Jeremiah 42:10
The only reason the sun rises every day is because God gives it His permission. He's never had a wink of sleep, and nothing is hidden from His sight. God has been God through every single day of your heritage.
Sam - I can't wait to do the "I beat cancer" dance together with you!
with much love
Mrs. Zral
Hi Sam,
I'm glad you took the plunge & had your mom cut your hair. I'm glad you were still smiling. I remember when you were in kindergarten there was some kind of challenge & your dad had to get his head shaved. I just remember how upset you were seeing him get his head shaved. You've come along way since then. I'm in with Rosie to get my head shaved if the students raise $2,999.99 so we'll see if they can do it. I've got a pattern for a 'comfort hat' that you sew out of any kind of fabric. I made one for Mrs. Zral & she said it was a bit snug but nice because it helped keep your head warm at night. I'll have to be making some more & I'll try making a kid's sized one for you.
Here's a joke Rod Unger told at church today: A man was in a library & went up to the libraian and said,"I'll take a large burger, large fries & a large coke." "This is a library!" the libraian said. "Oh," the man very quietly replied, "I'll take a large burger, large fries & a large coke."
"So do not fear, for I AM with you, do not be dismayed, for I AM your God. I WILL strengthen you and help you; I WILL uphold you with my righteous right hand." Isiah 41:10 This is one of my favorite very especially when I've gone through rough times. We do have a great God who will continue to strengthen you & give your what you need each moment.

Hi Sam!
Nice do. You'll be so cool for summer!
I showed my mom the blog the other day and she commented on your gorgeous hair. We look forward to seeing its return!
Looks like it was a gorgeous weekend there, I'm glad you could get out and enjoy some of the sights. (and the ice cream!) Wish we could drop by, but blog notes will have to suffice for now.
Cam and I are helping to plan our neighbourhood music festival on the 20-22 of June, the Wallflowers (Bob Dylan's son) will be here the Friday night, among others, and one of the acts on Saturday night will be Jim Cuddy from Blue Rodeo, as well, Jennifer Warnes will perform on Sunday. I'm really looking forward to a fun weekend of music with our neighbours.
This is a great neighbourhood - with lots of opportunities to build relationships and be salt and light. You can pray that we stay salty! And that God will use us to draw people He's already talking to, closer to a personal relationship with Jesus.
As our school year draws to a close and I finish my final year as a youth leader, I remain grateful that God has drawn each of our children to walk with him. I see so much hurt and emotional trauma out there - and kids making soul-crushing choices, that all I can do is walk with those who are hurting and pray that God will give us grace for each day.
That's what I'll pray today for you, Ger and Deb as well - grace to handle whatever the passing of each hour of the day unwraps. We love you.
I'm praying for you whenever God mentions you to me, which is frequently. As I fold laundry, wash dishes, pause from writing stuff about green building practices (yawn - would rather pray!) and build volunteer schedules, your names rise from my lips to God's ears.
May you feel God's peace and His rest today. Love, Heather et al
Sam,
I was sitting in my easy chair last night watching television, getting in shape to watch the Olympic Games this summer, when I had an overwhelming urge to pray for you and your family. I don't know what came over me. Anyway, the urge passed...
...just kidding. Anyway, we pray for all of you a lot these days. I prayed for you this morning right after I thanked God for the corn flakes. Old habits die hard. Food always gets first priority in my scheme of things. Hope you don't mind.
Love you lots,
U. Dennis
Hey sam,
I just read the blog today and I saw you shaved your head. We're all praying for you buddy!
Barkerville was fun but it would have been more fun whith you!!!!!
We all missed you and wished you were there.
Can't wait to see you again!

Hi Sam (and family)!
We just wanted to let you know we think of you and your family often. We pray for you lots and Kaitlynn will remind us when we don't. Wishing you God's nearness and strength in these trying days.
The Staves Family
Hi Sam,
Happy June! Your haircut looks great! After school I received the card you wrote for the class, and I'll make sure to read it to them tomorrow. When Mr. Avery was in Alberta last week-end, he brought home a family pet...I was a little worried at first, but was happily surprised to find out it was a baby tortoise! We named him Frodo! Apparently they can live for up to 100 years! I'll bring him to school when you're back and you can meet him.
We're thinking of you lots and praying for you and your family all the time...give your Mom a big hug from all of us, too...take care.
Love,
Mrs. Avery
Hi Sam!
Since you have been the subject of much prayer and concern lately; I thought I'd share this funny tidbit of info. with you. Apparently, you have been the object of some serious stalking all year. Have you noticed a cute little grade 1 girl following you, then turning red in the face and running away, and then staring at you from afar? It seems my darling 6 year old is smitten and wants to marry you. Yes, there is an age difference, but she is mature for her age! Here is a snippet of our recent conversation:
"Why do you like Sam so much, Callie?"
"I don't know."
"Did he do something nice for you?"
"No."
"Has he ever spoken to you?"
"No."
"Does he even know you are alive?"
"No."
"Then what is so special about Sam?"
"I want Mrs. Goertzen to be my mother-in-law."
So it seems that the Goertzen family continues to leave a lasting and favourable impression!!
Sam, we pray for you every day. Callie, especially, prays the hardest! Your famiy's blog is awesome and inspirational, and so are you!
God Bless,
Mr. and Mrs. Fast and Miya and Callie Fast

With love and care,

Hi Goertzen family,
Kate - it was great to read your comment, we've been praying a lot for you girls too! Love the picture of you and Sam together on the couch!
I was reviewing Megan's memory work with her and thought how appropriate it was for this time, both for you guys, as well as Sam's fellow classmates as they journey with Sam. Psalm 121 - I lift my eyes to the hills, where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, Maker of heaven and earth. He will not let your foot slip - He who watches over you will not slumber; indeed, He who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord watches over you , the Lord is your shade at your right hand; the sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night. The Lord will keep you from all harm, He will watch over your life; the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.
One other side note - with this pregnancy I've gained A LOT of experience with the whole throwing up thing, so have a helpful tip for you =) Baggies! I started carrying ziplock baggies around with me - so much easier, you can just throw them away and not have to clean anything up. So Sam, hopefully the meds will prevent you from having to use this tip, but I thought I'd share it just in case!
