Day 34 and Day 35

Greetings from rainy White Rock,

How are all my favorite bald eagles doing today? I'm sure there is a run on hats and bandanas in Prince George this week. Still can't get over the sheer(ed) numbers of participants. My hat is off to all of you, and Sam's hair is falling for you too.

Sam's steroid is wearing off I have seen in incline in napping, he's more tired, and a slight decline in ravenousness. (Is there even such a word?) At least the night feedings have stopped, and the constant food conversations have abated somewhat. His joints and bones have been less achy the past couple days and he walked the furthest yesterday than he has in 6 1/2 weeks. This may not seem like much to you but it causes much joy for me. Positive changes, no matter how little, are worth being thankful for.

We drove down to Burnaby, stopped in at the new Costco to pick up a few items, and spent some time visiting with friends and cousins. We were excited to attend my nieces special Aboriginal Award Ceremony, where she would be receiving a well deserved award. We were so disappointed when the Micheal J. Fox auditorium in South Burnaby High was packed and standing room only. After a few minutes it was apparent we could not stay...it was too hot, too crowded, and too full of "germs." The traffic home was heavy so we stopped at a new shopping area close to the off ramp. I'm getting very brave about driving around in this mega city...pretty good for this small town girl! It happened to be an outlet area so I wheeled Sam around and we had fun looking at a lot great stuff, but only window shopped! We found our new favorite store...Home Outfitters! I don't think you could ever guess why, so I'll just tell ya! We found an area where they have all these massage chairs. We sat in them for 45 minutes and oohed and aahed as it soothed and kneaded our sore muscles. We didn't even know we had such sore muscles until the chair started working on us. Sam had lots of fun programming MY chair and making it do all these weird things on me while he sat by and laughed!

When we arrived home we had 3 messages from Oncology. We were prepared to start his next round of chemo today and then on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Sam's appointments were cancelled and rescheduled for next week instead. His white blood cell, red blood cells and hemoglobin were ok. His platelet count was excellent but his neutrophils had plummeted. He was not ready for chemo again. I was totally deflated and so disappointed. We both had planned for the treatment days and were hoping to stay on schedule. Sam, at the same time, was somewhat relieved, it postpones the inevitable treatments. So more blood tests next week on Tuesday, with the hope that he can restart treatment on Wednesday. So now we have some unplanned free time and no one to play with. Does anyone want to come do something with us today? If you have any favorite things you do here that and don't include crowds and are reasonable priced please let us know...we need some ideas.

Uncle Mel and Auntie LaDonna came over for awhile to visit this morning on their way to LaDonna's conference in Whistler. That was great! Sam's back napping and I'm catching up on correspondence and house jobs! Enjoy your day!

Debbie signing out for now.

In Vancouver there's a place called Rosedale On Robson which is a hotel and if you go there there's a restuarant inside called Rosie's ( I think that's what it's called) and if you go inside and order the big ben brownie man you'll be suprised at the size I suggest ordering to share
It's very good.

Simon Fraser University has a beautiful rose garden it is up on that high hill and you can see parts of Vancouver from there. Langley has a nice water park in the downtown, it also has Campuse Crusade for Christ near Costco and Wal Mart they ussed to have a good book store. If you get there you are a block from our old house. It hhas changed alot in that area since we lived there 5 years ago. We are leaving for my home town tomorrow and I will miss reading your blog before bed each night. My parents computer and internet are very slow. I will catch up with you in a couple weeks. Until then you are in our hearts and prayers daily. Bless you all. The Gyllichs

Hi Sam & Deb,
Thinking of you again tonight. Our internet connection was down earlier, and Catie was really wanting to catch up on the last few days, but, alas, it was her bedtime, and so, NOW the internet is working...

Sam - We do pray that the little setback in your schedule will be for the good in the end. God usually has His reasons for these little changes to our plans that we don't quite "get" until after the fact. Sounds like you've been given lots of great ideas for things to do down there, but activities in the big city just aren't quite the same as just hanging with good friends; especially when you're easily tired. By the way, you looked GREAT on the webcam the other day - puffy cheeks and all! Mr. Gairns can relate to that - he's been on prednisone in the past, and it always did the same to him.
So--- have you decided yet on the baked treat you'd like me to send down with your Dad & Sis'? Just let us know!
Catie played today with few new girls in the neighborhood (ones she sort of knew, but just recently met again) I won't name any names, but suffice it to say that when I aked her tonight how her playtime was with them, the only answer she could give me was, "I miss Sam..." and she didn't want to talk anymore. You are very much missed here in our neighborhood Sam and Debbie...
Catie is looking forward to all of the year-end fun at school, but says she is going to miss Mrs. Avery - it's been a great year!

When we got home from school yesterday, we saw a very beautiful (bald eagle) flying around your basketball hoop down the way. We waved, and she waved back. It was your K8.

We need some more sunshine here in P.G.- it's been sorely lacking here for the past week... Well, we'll just keep thinking of you, Sam, and praying, and THAT should bring us a dose of the SONSHINE!

Much love to you both.

Hi Sam & Debbie,
Ladner is a cool little community & not far from you. The Pleskos used to live there & we explored lots of places around there. If you look on your maps of the Ladner area, look for Westham Island and the Reifel(sp??) Bird sanctuary. It is a really cool place to walk or stroll around in your wheel chair. The only crowds you will probably run into are the ducks that swarm you when you feed them! It's a great place to explore and the cost is not very much. I'm quite enjoying my fuzzy head & went out and bought a couple more hats tonight. I like the fact that after riding my bkie & wearing my helmet I don't have to worry about helmet hair!!!So far I haven't sunburned my head because the sunshine is very intermitent! Enjoy your few days of reprieve & I'm sure you will find some great things to do & some yummy food along the way. You continue to be in our thoughts and prayers.
