Day 13

Salutations from sunny White Rock,

I am enjoying the sunshine, the beautiful flowering shrubs and flowers I can see from all the windows in the condo, the gentle sea breeze, and Sam having more energy today!

We both had a great night's sleep and Sam is suffering less because of his anti naseau pills. He woke up at 5:00 am and was anxiously waiting for me to open my eyes so he could ask if we could get breakfast started. That's my new foody boy! He helped stir the hashbrowns, supervised me frying up his bacon, and was sipping on his smoothie! What a wonderful start to our morning. After our devotions he spent some time emailing his cousin Josh, trying to save his music and put his new tunes on his ipod with little success. Ger, we need help!

Great to see on his feet a little more, eating well, and enjoying some added energy. He peaks and valleys throughout everyday with his energy level, conversations, pain, and mobility. We enjoy the moments together when he's feeling up: we read, fly his little mini helicopter which gives us a lot of laughs, plan more meals, he talks on the phone for a few minutes, plays with his DS, listens to music.

He's had headaches since his last lumbar puncture on Friday. This is common. Dr. Lucy gave him a few hints to relieve it: lie down and drink Coke! He really liked the sounds of the latter.

We have much time to talk about a lot of stuff. He frequently shares his thoughts with me ( and Ger when he was here)...we've developed our very own mini cancer support group. We review the series of events, what has happened in the past 2 weeks ( seems like months), thank God for so many answered prayers, and enjoy the bits and pieces in the day when he is feeling better. He often comments about school, friends, the letters, cards, and blogs you've sent him, and reminisces about what a great time he had during spring break.

I have been spending time each day reading about ALL, true stories about cancer survivors and being very encouraged by a book Ger found in the Children's Hospital Library entitled, " Ya Can't Let Cancer Ruin Your Day." Making the most of each moment of the day, celebrating the many good things God gives us in the midst of some pretty scary days, laughing, loving, and sharing our sadness.

Sam's hair is still on his head and seems very attatched to him. We keep wondering if this is the day. He gives it a few good yanks throughout each day to check on its current status.

We are going to attempt a little outing to Grandma and Grandpas house for a change of scenery. I think he needs to use Grandpas computer to get his music done, although he told me I needed some time off to get away, go for a walk, and buy more food (for guess who!) He also has been counting down the hours until he can bite into his flank steak sandwich. And you can go ahead and laugh, but I am totally serious. The countdown started yesterday, right after he placed his food wish with Grandma. I have been using this new chemically induced obsession to my advantage, of course! I can now bribe him with food, if he does something he'd rather not do! I just did it now and it works fabulously.

We continue to be inspired by your prayers and expressions of love!

Really nice to speak to you this morning for a few minutes, Sam, between snacks. I hear your Aunt Ellie banging pots around in the kitchen upstairs, and the smells wafting down into the basement are sensational. I'm beginning to get a bit of a drool going down the left side of my chin. I'm impressed that you're holding up so well with all the drugs you're taking. Good thing you're built like a Ford truck.

Keep smiling,
U. Dennis

Hi Sam!

Good to hear your voice today! You sounded very chipper.

I cannot believe no one has told you about the bake sale the Grade 4class had! They raised over $480.00 to buy school supplies for Mr. Beeksma to take down to Honduras. Mmm the baking was delicious.

Well, Rosie and I think we are taking prendisone too. We LOVE to eat and dream of Starbucks when we are at work. Rosie even ate a Purdy's chocolate off the floor this afternoon! I couldn't believe it! She might be angry at me for mentioning this ont he blog...so don';t tell her! ;)

Hi Sam and Debbie,

So good to be able to hear how you are doing. You are in the same condo that JP spent a lot of time in when he was about your age. His grandma and grandpa would take him to the beach and out for fish and chips and let him spend lots of time watching TV which he wasn't allowed to do at home. When you feel up to it the best place in the world for fish and chips is at Moby Dick's on the waterfront. Keep on doing so well.

Hi Mrs. Goertzen,
I miss you. I'm praying for you and Sam. I am praying that his body feels better soon. I like looking at your pictures on the computer. Sam, I have been eating Kit Kat ice cream and it's delicious. I hope you think about it. In class we have caterpillars. They are BIG! You are a great teacher. I hope to see you soon. You made kindergarten so fun. I loved you as my teacher.

Love
