This is now my second unassisted blog entry, I just lost my first one! Okay, this situation is stretching me in more ways than one! If you know me well, you know I completely rely on Ger and my kids to do most of my techy work for me. I provide them with much humor and something to mock.
Sam wanted to add a few comments. "I want to thank all of you for all your support, prayers, and help. I believe that God is going to help me through all of this. I wanted to thank the Fort George Baptist Youth Group for having a fundraiser just for me! That sure made me feel special."
"Many of you have been asking me how I like having my braces off. Well I got to eat popcorn today with lots of extra butter, and I get to chew gum again. They came off pretty easy, but I'll have to get them on again and go through the first few weeks of having sore teeth! They had to come off so they won't give me sores." Thanks again for all you are doing...Sam
One of the side effects of Sam's anti-cancer drug called prendisone (a steroid), is that his brain is constantly thinking of food and wanting to eat. I was told this ahead of time, but really couldn't believe that Sam would still want to eat even though he is feeling so nauseous and vomiting. Now Sam enjoys food, but has never been fixated on it. Well now every conversation revolves around food: what he's thinking about eating, what he has eaten, and what you are eating. He places his food order with Grandma who is delighted to make whatever he fancies. He has his next 6 meals planned is always wondering what kind of snack he might have. This food obsession has given us some good laughs together and with those we visit with. Two nights ago Sam dreamt that Nolan Hanson as working at McDonald's and Sam could get free fries every time he went in. A few nights prior he dreamt of Strawberry Fraps from Starbucks. The down side is that his brain tells him to eat, but his stomach has shrunken so much that he gets full quite quickly. He gets a sore tummy from eating too much. I'll have to remind him to say no to his brain, so his tummy won't hurt!
After our traumatic day yesterday, today went rather smoothly. After speaking with the doctor and LaDonna yesterday, we have a new plan and meds to manage his nausea. Today he kept all his food inside his body! He spent his day moving from his bed, to the couch in the living room, to the recliner in the family room. He is not interested in leaving the condo to sit outside and he has no strength to go for a walk. His spirits were good today. We enjoy having devotions together and reading from a book he especially likes: Chicken Soup for Mother and Son.
To our family members and friends who have and are experiencing this similar cancer journey, we now have a better understanding of what you must have gone through. We empathize with your struggles and celebrate you better days and milestones.
We love reading your comments and do let Sam know what you've been eating!

Well done Debbie. Techie or not - you posted great. We are praying for your family and we love to hear the updates so that we know what to pray for more specifically. Emily and the rest of the class misses you but we understand your job as a mom comes first.
Food report? We ate sausages and noodles and sauce and broccoli (don't think even Sam is craving that) Strawberries and ice cream too - hope that helps...:)

Sam, Still looks like you have more hair than your dad. Your 2nd cousins Natalie and Holly, who are in Gr. 10 and 11, shaved their heads to raise money for cancer support in Kelowna, earlier this month. I'm still waiting to see a picture! I was so happy to hear about your good counts yesterday. I have been praying for you and your family since I heard the news. Maybe we will see you while you are here. "Aunt" (sort of) Louise
Hi Sam,
You want to know about food & what we've been eating--that's right up my alley!!! Today in my Home Ec. 10 class the students made 4 different kinds of salads--Broccoli & pineapple, Waldorf(with apples, walnuts & celery), Greek & Lettuce with Mandarin oranges & candied almonds. Most of the students really liked them and there was some of the broccoli one leftover. Tomorrow they will be sampling different types of milk and trying to guess which ones are which--skim, 1%, 2%, etc. They will also make their own smoothies with whatever they like. My favorite is on Thursday when we do a field trip to Baker Extraordinaire & P & R Organics. We usually get some free samples & you know how good their cookies are! Last week we tortured the school on Thursday & Friday by baking bread and cinnamon buns. The yummy smells wafted through the school last block of the day.
We continue to pray for you & I'll keep you updated on my Home Ec. 10 class and what we are cooking.
Here's one of my husbands jokes:
What did one tonsil say to the other tonsil? It must be spring because here comes another swallow.

ok so the post previous was not typed by Riley at 11:47 pm, however he tried last night and since his mom is not techie either I had to retry it tonight. The thoughts are from him though, I just scribed.
Our dear friends our hearts ache with yours. I am sending you a hug right now Debbie and Sam.
Sam right now we are going through a puffed wheat/choc squares obsession! mmm so yummy.
We are down in July and would like to come say hi, we will touch base closer to the date to see if you are up to it!
Love Julie and the noisy boys!
Hi Sam and Debbie,
I am so glad to hear that you are responding positivly to the meds. I really understand the prednisone-food connection! When I was a little younger than Sam, I spent my share of time at Children's Hospital myself. Before I started my prednisone all I would eat was popcorn or strawberries...after the meds...almost anything as long as it involved butter, chocolate, or bread!
The grade 7's are praying for you- hang in there it gets easier.

Good for you Debbie! You can do it, my kids laugh at me all the time too, but, I'm coming along in the computer department. Sam I must be feeling sympathy pains for you cause lately I've been eating everything I shouldn't chocolates, which I have hidden in my desk drawer so Mr Costley and Mr Crosina don't get their hands on them. French cookies from Starbucks, Apricot/Raspberry Scone from Starbucks, sugar, sugar, and more sugar. Oh well if it makes you feel better why not? Love Rosie
Dear Debbie and Sam,
We have been praying for you every day and following your progress. We love your jokes Sam! I wish I could be there to help. Grandma told me she was making flank steak for you. Sounds good! We ate Japanese food last night to celebrate Daniel's graduation with his 2 favorite teachers. Maybe thoughts of sushi won't stimulate your appetite... It does make Daniel hungry though. We love you,
Aunty Darlene
Ah Debbie I can totally relate to your computer skills. I do not know how many things I have out in "cyberworld" that did not go to where I wanted them too. Who knows who has received many lesson plans that I intended to send to my account at Cedars!
Your family continues to be in our prayers.
Our food report is not that exciting, Sam. Hot dogs. I told Micah he needed to eat his meat before we left for soccer and Curtis pointed out that we probably cannot refer to hot dogs as meat. Sorry that it is not as exciting as some of the others but now you know where to invite yourselves for supper when you come back :)
