My sister Donna has been so great here in Vancouver. She brings us food, gave me her car to use, brings special stuff for Sam and has gone out of her way to care for us all week long - what would we do without this support here in Vancouver. Ger's mom and dad have sure helped too. The Corn Chowder is still Sam's favorite meal... one more serving to go!
Last night I flipped open my devotional book by Grace Fox and the entry which was next was entitled, "Thankful Heart." It was very good and the Inward Glance asked to name 10 things this day I was thankful for. This was timely as Ger and I had discussed that we need to do this each evening together. Here was what I was thanking God for:
1. Sam was feeling his best since last Sunday.
2. He had his longest walk since we got here - 5 minutes which was plenty for him
3. I was able to read all the emails that were sent to us in the past 5 days and was so very moved by your words of encouragement, prayers, offers of help, and your friendship
4. For the incredible nurse he's had for the past 3 days ...Jess!
5. That Children's Hospital is located in Vancouver where we have family and a few friends so we don't feel alone or lonely
6. Mel and LaDonna are living with our girls in our home, and taking care of Lucy too!
7. For the "Cleaning Chicks" who worked their magic in our home yesterday. Thanks Anita and Sharon! K8 said it was "sparkling clean!"
8. For the incredible amount of research that has been done with ALL, and that we are in the best center possible for this. The Fundraising event held in Vancouver this coming weekend for Children's Hospital has given me a whole new perspective!
9. For all of you reading this blog who are talking to God with us and on behalf of our Sammy Boy!
10. For the opportunity we had to go to Disney World with our family, the Karpenkos and the Uys this past spring break. We were being very encouraged, the last few years by a woman who was on our case to take a trip so our kids could experience this wonderland adventure. Although it was challenging to make it happen, we look back and see how perfectly timed it was. Our children absolutely loved it and Sam commented on the way home that it was the best spring break he had ever had. Those memories are now even sweeter and more precious. He was strong, healthy and showed no signs or hints of what was brewing in his body.
At 11:37 am, three beautiful nurses came in completely gowned up, and masked up, and gave Sam 3 shots of his most recent chemotherapy - PEG asparaginase. They count to three and then all inject at the same time into his thighs. He watched and smiled through the whole ordeal (more than his mom could do who had to sit down and close her eyes). The nurse said, "Wow, I've done alot of these and I've never seen a kid smile through it before..." Sam is amazing.
At about 2pm we switched rooms. We'd asked people to pray that we could just stay in the room we had already set up but in the end, we moved and this room is bigger, quieter and better!
This evening we spent about an hour in another teaching session about what to expect over the next month of treatment and beyond. This is such a big, big project. The more we learn, the more we realize just how much we are going to have to pull together in order to make this treatment happen. The binder says, "This is not a sprint, it is a marathon... pace yourself." We are beginning to understand what this means...
Debbie and I had briefly talked about how this was going to be a challenge traveling back and forth to PG from Children's Hospital. There are going to be a lot of trips for the 7 months that Sam is in the intense treatment stage because there will be times we will need to spell each other off in Sam's care. In the maintenance stage, we have to make regular trips for checkups. God answered a huge prayer for us today when someone contacted us to say that they would help us with all our transportation costs during Sam's 1095 Day treatment for A.L.L. We can't say how much it means to us to have so many people generously giving their support to help us with this huge project. This is going to take the village... thank you...
Thanks for all your thoughts and prayers. So far, the doctors are pleased with the way Sam is responding to the treatments even though his blood counts are so low.

Hey Sam,
Three beautiful nurses? Some guys have all the fun! We hope you start to feel much better soon. We've been joining in with all those who are praying for your recovery, even though all those other people are most certainly doing a good job. We just found a space on the wheel to put our shoulders to. When you're feeling up to swinging a hammer, I could use a hand to close in under the deck with some lattice-work. Or did you already have plans for the summer? I don't imagine it's going to be easy to drag you away from all those pretty nurses. :)
Say hi to your family for us, and tell them we're praying for them too, just in case they didn't guess.
U. Dennis and A. Ellie
Hi Sam
we all miss you very much.

Hi guys:
Wow - just heard this morning and I've been trying to process this all day. I started praying this morning and we will be holding your whole family in our prayers for about 1095 days.
Sam - hang in there bud. If ALL is the opponent you are sure to hit a home run! And I'm sure you will be pitching a no hitter!
Deb and Ger - don't know what to say except stay strong and true to your faith.
The one thing that you can feel sure of is the love and support of your family and friends. They will be there even on those days when you can't wrap your mind around the "how is this going to look/work" days.
Know that we are praying for you all and please please let us know if we can do anything to help.
Terry, Todd, Mike and Kayla
Hey Katelyn and Karly:
We know you guys are in this fight too. It must be so hard on you both being so far away and not feeling like you can help. I'm know that Sam is feeling all your love and prayers and it is so cool that your are such a close family. As a mom I know that it makes it a ton easier on your parents knowing that you are both being loved and cared for by your friends and family - but it also is a huge help to them that you are both so mature and doing what you can to make the best of all of this.
Man - I wish we could just meet in the greenbelt for a group hug!
Terry
Hey Deb and Ger
Make sure you save all your reciepts for you expensives because they can be claimed on your income tax...This advice came from my mother-in-law.
Sam, I loved the jokes especially the unhoppy frog one.
God bless and miss you dearly. Sherry

Hi Debbie, Gerry and Sam:
You guys are so beautiful!! I am so touched by your blog and the incredible attitude you all have. It is so obvious you are deeply rooted in your walk with the Lord.
Debbie, just a week or two ago, we had a conversation in the church kitchen, about how we can know how people are doing by the fruit they are bearing. As i read your blog and from the news i have heard from others, it is so obvious your fruit is beautiful.
Our family's praying for you. Our girls pray for Sam every meal and bedtime and Mark and I pray for all five of you regularly. God bless you guys as you continue to serve Him "wholeheartedly".
Jennifer
Hey Sam
I was shocked as i found out the news from my mom. I quickly rushed to tell best friend, and your volley-ball friend Mercedes the news. As she burst out in tears, I told her it was okay, and then said a pryer for you. We are always thinking of you and always praying for happiness! Get well soon buddy :D

Hi Gerry, Debbie & Sam,
You are in our fervent prayers at school with your Cedars family, at home with my family, and at our church prayer meeting every Thursday evening. We are trusting the Lord for healing and for peace amidst a storm. Remember the words of the psalmist, "The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my Deliverer; My God, My Strength, in whom I will trust." Psalm 18:2a Love and prayers, Kathy & Ed Denicola and family
Good morning, Goertzens, from (finally!) rainy Calgary.
I'm on a deadline, so will just tell you that we were shaken to the core yesterday when we heard this incredible news. But our God will not be shaken or be moved. So He is the mountain we run to. Cam and I, Chantel + Bizz + Chyenne are praying for you at every opportunity. My Mom and Dad say hi - and want you to know they'll pray too. Loving and praying today from the Eastern slopes of the Rockies.
Howdy Sam,
Get well soon. We are praying for you. Looking forward to whippin you in four-square. How's the DS - do you have a favourite game?
Hailey Z.
I've been thinking of your family and praying for you continually!
It was neat to see a photo of Dr. Willis there with Sam. She was my doctor in V'hoof. She also attended the same MB church in V'hoof that our family did. She's a lovely lady.
I'll keep praying for you all, and look forward to celebrating with you on day 1096!
Love, Janice
Hi Goertzen family,
Just wanted to let you know that we have been praying for you and thinking about you lots! Your faith during this time is a great testament to the God we serve. A verse for brave Sam: "Be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go" Joshua 1:9
Love,
Laura and Mike Cochrane

Hey Sam,
Whose idea was it to stick your head under the tap and call it fun? It might be more fun for you if you got to stick your Dad's head under that tap!
I am glad to see you can still have a good time together! By the grace of God you'll be able to do that for many years. I hope and pray that you'll always feel God's nearness. Remember, he never takes a nap. He watches over you ALL the time, even when you're asleep. Have a good night sleep, all of you!
Mrs. VH
