Just a short entry tonight as we have had a super busy day. We had a great opportunity this morning when Sam was disconnected from his IV for the first time since arriving. They taped up his VAD and he got the chance to stand in the shower for a while.
Then, it was off to the orthodontist clinic for Sam to get his braces off. It is too likely that the braces would cause infection with his compromised immune system for them to leave them on. It was quite a challenge for the dentist to remove the braces - Lo/Elliot really put 'em on good! :)
Then, it was time for Sam to get a nap and Debbie and I spent 2 hours with the Discharge Planning Nurse, discussing the "what ifs" after sam is discharged. The biggest risk is infection and it is likely that he'll have to come in many times for IV antibiotics during his treatment. Any time he gets a fever, he has to be admitted to the BCCH for a 7-10 day stint of IV antibiotics. We're hoping this doesn't happen too often.
Our next appointment was with the nutritionist. That was about 2 hours. We talked about how his appetite changes and the incredible importance of continued nutrition through these years. Sam has to keep his weight on or they have found that these kids don't grow. So, it will be a challenge to make this happen properly for Sam. Both of these professionals were amazing and helped us so much. There is so much to learn about this treatment plan and this disease.
We had a nice visit with a family whom we see each summer - Bob and Glenna Hollier and their boys. They kept their distance (literally) and we had a little visit. Sam's face just lit up when he saw them.
Friday will be a big day as he receives chemo in his spine, a bone marrow biopsy and aspiration, and two chemo drugs in his IV... all in one day.
We're hoping he gets released on Saturday.
Thanks again for all the support and prayers. We can feel it.
Ger
Here's a song we listened to together today...
CASTING CROWNS
"Praise You In This Storm"
I was sure by now
You would have reached down
And wiped our tears away
Stepped in and saved the day
But once again, I say "Amen",
and it's still raining
As the thunder rolls
I barely hear Your whisper through the rain
"I'm with you"
And as Your mercy falls
I raise my hands and praise the God who gives
And takes away
And I'll praise You in this storm
And I will lift my hands
For You are who You are
No matter where I am
And every tear I've cried
You hold in Your hand
You never left my side
And though my heart is torn
I will praise You in this storm
I remember whenI stumbled in the wind
You heard my cry to you
And you raised me up again
My strength is almost gone
How can I carry on
If I can't find You
But as the thunder rolls I barely hear
You whisper through the rain "I'm with you"
And as Your mercy falls I raise my hands and praise the God who gives
And takes away
I lift my eyes unto the hills
Where does my help come from?
My help comes from the Lord
The Maker of Heaven and Earth

Our prayers are with you all as you travel through this storm. I was listening to "Praise You in This Storm" the other day and thought of you. You all are such a testimony to God's goodness and love.
Blessings,
Steve and Annette Staves
You are all so brave. We have all been praying for you. Certainly looks like you choose well for orthodontics... :) Hope you are all feeling well, and stay strong as Gods love will never waver.

Sam!
So, you handsome boy, I've been praying for you... I was away in Edmonton last weekend and Catie told me on the phone that you'd been taken to BCCH! I said "What!??"
So each day since then I've been praying. I talked to K8 yesterday, and told her that I will be sending up a "bullet" prayer each and every time I think of you.
Gerry, and Deb... Today I went for a walk and as I walked past your home, I stopped and prayed in front of your driveway. Please know this: Each and every time I lay eyes on your home, I will pray. Your home will be a sentinal reminder to me to lift Sam and your whole family up to our Creator.
I believe that this is the exact same type of leukemia that Abby Goodrich fought through to a resounding victory. She was 4 when it began. Talking with Ellie & Jeff will be very helpful to you I'm sure!
We thank God for your very obvious deep faith. May God - daily - fill you up all over again so that you'll not only get throught all of the "Everests" ahead, but that all of the staff and other families at BCCH will know without a doubt that Jesus is Lord!
Sam... Loads of love to you. Catie had already typed a whole message to you, but we somehow lost it in the sending. She'll try again tomorrow, OK?

Sam,
Dan and I think of you often and are praying for you and your family.
You look great! I bet it feels nice to have your braces off. Now you can eat all the sticky foods you want. ;) I used to work at BCCH in the dental clinic. You are in good hands!
Here is a verse that keeps coming to mind- "Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous fall." Psalm 55:22
~Kristina & Dan Scott

matthew 11:28-30
Come to me all you who are weary and burdened, and i will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for i am gentle and humble in heart and you will fine rest for your soul. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.
matthew 6:25-34
therefore i tell you do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink, or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than clothes? look at the birds of the air they do not sow or reap or store away in barns and yet hyour heavely father feeds them are you not MUCH more valuable than they? who of you by worrying can add a single hour to your life? ... but seek first his kingdom and his righteosness and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
i dont know if these verses help at all.. but i think they are very powerful in the right situation.
May God bring joy and peace to you and your family.

Hey - I love Casting Crowns. They came to Calgary a couple of years ago and I took Bizz and Chyenne and a couple of their friends, it was one of the best ever - until Starfield a couple of weeks ago. More worship than rock star, amazing lack of ego. Praise you in the storm is one of my favourites, too. I'm singing it with you, and it might be the rain, or it might be tears. Last night, my Grade 12 SuperGroup prayed for all of you. Your names are being lifted up - and by people you may never meet this side of eternity. That's the great thing about this Family. Love you all, Heather et al
Yo Sam

Mr. Avery says hi, too! He's going to a reptile show in Alberta this week-end, so I'll let you know if he comes home with any new and exciting critters!!
I hope you all sleep well tonight! Take care. Love, Mrs. Avery
Hey Sam,
A policeman saw a man walking down the street with a penguin. He told the man he should take the penguin to the zoo.'Good idea', the man replied, and off he went. The next day the policeman saw the man again, and he still had the penguin with him. 'I thought I told you to take the penguin to the zoo', the policeman said. 'I did', answered the man, 'and today I'm taking him to the movies!'
Hope you're having a good day!
