Day 20

What lies behind us and what lies before us are small matters compared to what lies within us. Emerson

I have witnessed the unbelievable strength and courage Sam has displayed from the first day we were in the Prince George Hospital, then at Children's, when he was so very fragile and exhausted, and now here in White Rock. He is uncomplaining, cheerful and dreams about his plans for a full and healthy future. His sense of humor has not wavered and he can joke and take teasing about his unusual and sometimes very undignified circumstances. It is so evident to see God taking care of him and communicating to Sam in a profound way. Sam acknowledges daily that his Papa in heaven is providing whatever he needs to face each day. The words in this blog, which we will keep for our family, will always serve to remind me of my brave eleven year old warrior son. He's my hero!

We are experiencing, now first hand, the unpredictability of cancer. For instance, yesterday. Sam was experiencing new sensitivity and pain. Phone calls went back and forth from to our Oncology Team with concerns and advice. I was advised to go and get Doctor Grandpa to check Sam out. So off we went to the clinic where he works for an exam and tests. It is more than amazing to have a doctor in the family and be just minutes away. We were able to bring Sam in and out the back door so he would not have to be exposed to "sick " people in the waiting room. Then off to the pharmacy for some medications, home to administer them and relax (and have our heart rates return to normal). Having only lived with cancer for such a short time, we know that things can change and happen quickly. We have no idea what each day will bring our way, but I am very thankful for our family here in Vancouver and all the time in my days and nights to care for my Sammy boy.

The rest of the evening proved to be exceptional. A visit from Greg, Sharon, and Mitchell Nikkel, our friends from Prince George, was definitely the highlight of our day. They were here again to meet with specialists at Children's for Mitchell. It was great to talk about what we are going through with our sons unique needs, share laughter, tears, food, and be fully entertained by a very energetic, funny, adorable Mitchell. Thank you so much for being with us!

A huge congratulations to the Cedars Christian School track and field team for cleaning up at the races yesterday. We heard you all did fantastic! Sam was cheering you on, as this has always been one of his favorite days to participate in.

We're off for a walk in rainy White Rock and to get Sam a hot chocolate at Timmy's!

Oh me oh my, so many people have told me how cute I'm gonna look bald. I'm starting to freak out here Sam and Debbie. But on the bright side I heard on the radio today that summer in BC is suppose to be very nice after June of course. So maybe I can suntan my head just like your Dad and you. By the way, someone needs to tell your Dad he really should know his Mom and Dad's address. What a guy!

Hey Sam!
How has your day been? We're all praying for you and your family here at school. Here's a cool verse:

Deuteronomy 31:6
Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you."
