Day 22

Good News, Great News, Jumping Up and Down News...

Karly arrived at 8:30 this morning and we were so very happy to have her spend the weekend with us. We had breakfast together and then off to the hospital. We arrived early, got our name on the dry wipe board in cancer land, and played the waiting game. Chemo injections went well, follow up with the nurse went well and off to see Dr. Bond. He had some wonderful news to share with us. Sam has less than 5% blast cells left. He has passed the target numbers the doctors hope for during induction. Sam qualifies as a rapid responder! Thanks for your specific prayers, to the chemo drugs, and most of all to God, Sam is responding well. At this three week mark, most of the leukemia cells have been killed and Sam is in remission. This does not mean, however, that Sam is cured.

In two weeks will begin the next phase of his protocol...consolidation. The new chemo drugs that he will receive will attack the leftover blast cells that survived induction. While induction, what we are in now, is kind of like learning how to throw, catch and bat, consolidation is like playing the actual baseball or softball game. From the first day that consolidation begins, he will be treated for the next 3 years. The doctor has prepared us to play hard because we have some really tough games to play in the next 7 - 8 months. His body will subjected to high level toxins, his counts will plummet, and new side effects will appear as new drugs are introduced in his protocol.

There are several complicating factors which are watched very carefully by the oncology team.

1. Anemia. Low red blood cell counts...blood transfusion is needed, like today.

2. Thrombocytopenia. Not enough platelets...platelet transfusion is needed, he's had some already.

3. Infections. The white blood cell count gets to low or the wbcs aren't working well enough to fight a bacterial infection. If this happen, which it commonly does with ALL kids, we quickly return to the hospital for several days to a week to receive antibiotics. Very few kids make it through the next 7 months without this happening. Wouldn't it be great if Sam was to be one of those rare kids to never get an infection? Let's pray for that!

It's scary and overwhelming, but I'm counting on the "Goertzen Team" which you are all officially a part of if you are reading this, to help coach us through the season ahead.

What we thought would be a 2 hour visit to the clinic turned into a 6 1/2 hours. Remember I wrote that Sam was resting a lot the last two days? It was because his hemoglobin was so low. We waited for the blood to arrive which was an hour and a half, and then the transfusion took another 2 hours, plus the wait times, his chemo therapy and meeting with Dr. Bond. It was great to have Karly with us to talk, watch a movie with while Sam was being transfused, and for her to see what his clinic life is like. It was good for her to meet our oncology team members at the hospital as well and to see first hand some of his treatments.

Grad weekend is here, and Ger has been very busy. He has a truely beautiful date, our daughter K8 to accoompany him. I was really looking forward to attending this years graduation ceremonies. Thirteen years ago, I taught the kindergarten class when the teacher had to take a leave. It was my first experience, besides subbing, to teach this grade. I had a wonderful time and the students were great! I have very fond memories of the students and their parents. I asked Mr. Goertzen to pass on my comments that I would have loved to have given in person. It did save me a few tears and you grads from some embarassing stories I could have elaborated upon! I hope you have a fabulous weekend celebrating your great success. Blessings to you all as you leave Cedars and carry on with the adventures, challlenges, and the many unknowns that lie ahead of you. Our lives are truely precious and live them well, with integrity, love, faith and hope!

Debbie

P.S. I thought I published this post already a couple days ago, but alas it didn't show up. I'm resending today, Sunday.

Hi again Debbie,
Just wanted to rephrase my comment about report cards - I see that you are still thinking lots about school but your focus isn't anywhere near report cards (where mine is so totally there right now!) so if the comment about not writing report cards was an off comment, I need to apologize. Thanks for staying so positive when I know that seeing your son go through all of this will be an emotionally wringing time! You are a model to many of us as we see you rely on our God! Thank goodness He is big enough to rely on!
I am so thankful that Sam is going into remission and now we can pray for specifics focusing on the next 7 months and beyond.
Enjoy your time with your daughter.

Hi Sam, Debbie & Karly,
Great to hear the news about being in remission. Mr. Gaunt & I are scheduled to go give blood this Wednesday so we'll try to do our part keeping the supply up for you (not sure what your blood type is but I know our blood gets used for those who need it). Grad was great & your dad did a great job singing the Pooh song. There weren't many dry eyes after that. Our staff spoof video of the grads was fun to do & Mr. Crosina did a great job of putting it together. Hopefully you'll get a chance to see it. Your dad's spoof on Kyle was really funny! The grads looked amazing all dressed up, too. Thanks for blogging & keeping us up to date on how God is continuing to work through you in these amazing ways. It is truley inspiring to all of us.

To God Be All the Glory!!!! I cried when I read the good news, cause it really is good news that you have had such positive results. The money continues to come in and so I have resigned myself that I will be bald. But hey! new trend! Bald is beautiful. Grad was so incredibly beautiful. Gerry gave the best speech ever at the ceremony, and so did Debbie VanCalsteren. Hard to believe those cute little kindergarteners are all grown up into beautiful young ladies and handsome young men. I cried like a baby when Gerry sang Back to the Woods with Christopher Robin so glad the lights were out. God Bless
always in my thoughts and prayers. Sam if I ate all the stuff you're eating, I wouldn't be able to fit through my front door! Keep fighting.
Love Rosie

Hey Sam!
I miss seeing you around when I'm over at your house! I watched some Dr. Quin with Kate the other day. Then she came over for the weekend. If you're ever stuck on what to get her for a birthday present, a really simple one is a box of matches! And she thinks I'm easily amused!! She was pretty funny!

Mrs. Goertzen - you should be proud of kate, her and Katie-Sue Both wore dresses to grad (and looked very nice)!. We took some pictues for you. The whole evening was done well and was very nice.

Praying for you all,
Anna Brown

Hi Debbie and Sam:
Well like Rosie I know that I am going to be bald by the end of June. It is so good to hear that you had a good day at the mall and with your cousins. My family and I went to Vanderhoof today to see my parents and they were asking about you. I had told them about you when you first went to Vancouver. They are amazed and touched by your bravery and faith. It is an incredible witness tho them and to me and my family. When we were getting ready to come home my dad gave me a donation for the jar. Trust me I think that he really wants to see me and Rosie bald cause this will put us that much closer. They will be excited to hear that you have responded so well to the chemo treatments. I always want to cry when I read the blogs and tonight is no exception. You and your family and the bravery and unwavering faith that you all have. Thanks for being an incredible witness to me. I am honored to get my hair shaved for you. Love to you and your mom. Mrs. Kingg

Hi Sam,
My name is Ida, and I am Kyle's mom (from grade 12). Your dad did such a great spoof on Kyle, at the grad ceremony, that I was really glad I didn't have a full bladder because the chair would have been wet!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I bet you are funny, just like your dad!
I bet you are also pretty tired of all the needles, tests, and medicine that makes you sick. I think you are braver then any one I know! Sometimes I wish that us adults (old farts) could sign up for your chemo (like we do with the blood bank) so we could give you a break from the "feeling tired and sick" all the time.

Anyway, I just wanted to let you know that someone you don't even know, thinks you are amazing! I bet, that when it comes time for you to graduate from high school, some teacher will do a fabulous spoof about you that will make your parents and you laugh out loud!

Until that time, I'm secretly laughing out loud at the thought of Rosie going bald! I think we ought to call the local paper and have Rosie's shaved head on the front page. Of course, we wouldn't want to scare any young kids!!!!!!!

Prayers your way!

Sam - It's Craig here, from Promiseland. I miss yah man, but it's good to hear things are going (relatively) well. I don't have any great words of encouragement or strength, I think your focus on Christ's words make any I could say frivolous, just remember to keep that focus. We look forward to seeing you back here.

Debbie - If it is ok with you, I have an evening of shows lined up on the 19th at Pine Center Mall that I would like to turn into a fundraiser for your family. When you get a moment, please mail me with permissions, such as whether or I have your blessing, and if I can include this blog on the tickets. I've been told by Him to use my talents, and I hope I can bless your family in this. info@unrealitymagic.ca I admire your strength found in Him, a more solid rock is impossible to find. Take care,

Craig McKee

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What fantastic, exciting news! I'm so glad to hear that the Sam is responding well to the medication. I think of you all often, and the blog is so great to check in and see how you all are doing.

What a testament to the way we should all live our lives in complete trust of He who put us here!!

Keep up the great (hard!) work. I look forward to hearing more good news over the coming months!
