Sam's stamina and energy has increased this past week because he has had no chemo treatments for the last week and a half. Although it was hard to adjust to the delay, we were able to enjoy the great weather and our families.
On Saturday we spent the afternoon and evening with Ger's brothers family in Langely. We watched Amy, Becky, and Hannah play in their year end baseball tournaments. It was great to watch them in action, listen to Auntie Noni yelling and cheering on her girls and their teams,(she is the loudest parent in ALL the stands!), and be outside for the afternoon. We spent the evening eating, laughing, and watching a couple movies. Thanks for having us Goertzen family...we had a super time!
On Sunday, my sister, Donna came over in the morning so I could attend Grace Point church, located just a few minutes away. A couple of Ger's cousins go there and we have often attended there in the summers when we come stay with Grandma and Grandpa. After lunch, Donna, Lina, (my other "adopted sister") Sam and I went to Steveston, on someones recommendation. (Thanks to whoever you were!) Sam and I had never been there and it was INCREDIBLE! There was an outdoor Farmer's Market set up so we had fun looking around, sampling some food, and enjoying the local artisans. We saw the old canneries, historical buildings, toured the old shipbuilding yard and buildings, and were fascinated by all the fishing boats. We spent 3 hours touring around. I am so glad I got the wheelchair for Sam which enables us to do much more. He would never last more than 5 - 10 minutes otherwise. In the early evening we went to watch cousin Murphy play his indoor lacrosse game. Sam and I have never watched this game before and although we had heard about it, it didn't quite prepare us for the non stop ACTION, most of it very exciting, but some of it very scary. It really is something to experience. Having taken pointers from my sister-in-law Noni the previous day, our family cheering section managed to thoroughly embarrass my nephew...what great fun we had! We came home, skyped the other half of our family in PG, and literally fell into our beds...
We are experiencing two worlds: One is the world of cancer: nausea, headaches, vomiting, needles, pills, hospital visits, chemo, blood tests, invasive procedures, exhaustion. The other world includes: walks along the ocean, dreams, hopes, precious conversations, laughter, participating in touristy things, FOOD, extended family, friends, new and old, who are making our journey bearable and often wonderful! It's easy to feel like we are coping well, our spirits are up, when Sam is feeling good. Although we know he needs the chemo treatments to survive we don't look forward to them in anyway, shape or form. Please pray for Sam as his blood tests on Tuesday will determine whether he starts his next protocol on Wednesday. This will include another spinal tap on Wednesday and chemo treatments on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
It's another sunny, gorgeous day in White Rock, which we intend to enjoy!
Blessings on you and your day!

Hey Sam
Greetings from the shores of Lake Whatcom. We have just started our first week at Firwood for the summer. I hear that you wont be with us (understandable) but know that the Summer Staff of 2008 will be praying for you on a very regular basis and we definitely want to see you when you feel up to it. Tell your dad that we have a bunch of Hobie's with both of your names written all over them. You guys have an all access pass this summer if you want to "get away" for a day and come hang out on the swim beach etc (shooting your dad with paintball guns would rank right up there with my best day ever...think about it).
Blessings

Hey chickadees!
We are exhausted but happy after a full weekend of live music, local art and festival food (think about it, Sam - burgers, chicken burgers, pulled pork wraps, coleslaw, pop, chips, I can't even think about it anymore - just smelling it all weekend made me full!)
We enjoyed sun for most of it - only about 1 hour of rain Sunday morning, but then the gray skies parted and the heavens opened up and glorious sunshine returned.
Our private event on Friday night was okay, our clients were happy and that's very important!
Jakob Dylan is a good musician, but he doesn't love schmoozing with the plebes afterwards in the hospitality tent.
Jim Cuddy the next night, of Blue Rodeo fame, however, stayed and chatted with us behind the scenes, and relaxed, and reached out over the fence to our patrons as they left that night. What a difference. He was also amazing! Great concert. Jack Semple played before him, he's an astonishingly accomplished guitarist. Ger would've loved it! He's Phil Keaggy or beyond quality. He gave a workshop Sunday morning - free to weekend pass holders, it was great to see 40 or so people running to the cookshack with their guitars through the rain.
Then the 'dance band' Skavenjah rocked the house for 2 hours. A bunch of crazy guys with day jobs from Regina. Absence of ego, totally fun. Great time hanging with neighbours on the longest day of the year.
It's all about building relationships and building a strong community. Loved it.
Sunday, we relaxed and enjoyed "the sonic equivalent of an eiderdown quilt" the fates. Three women whose voices blend with such sweet harmonies, wow. followed by this 17-year-old grade 11 student from Edmonton with her grade 9 sister - they were so talented! Nothing sounds as good as family members who sing together. So sweet, I talked to Samantha (Schultz) about her plans for the summer - "I have to go home and write my final exams for Grade 11...then festivals all summer." What a great summer job, eh? Great blues (although at 17, what kind of blues experience can you have? You need to be 45 to get the blues, don't you? Maybe not.)
Then...Jennifer Warnes! What a gracious woman, somewhat fragile, but at 65 or so, what a golden voice. So pure, she's so...able, and gifted. I hope I use what I've been given til at least then or beyond. (Blue Raincoat - remastered, fantastic. She signed mine!)
So as the big tents come down, and the grounds get cleaned up, and regular sweet summer days roll on, we heave a sigh of relief that all the preparation and hours of organizing created a special weekend of bonding moments with other members of the committee, our spouses, and our volunteers. I am grateful to all 112 of them for pitching in and helping make it happen.
God was in it all, He has such a sense of humour! As a Grade 12 leader this year, I enjoyed all of my girls. One special friend - Rachel, lives in our 'hood. She and Bizz both attended Dr. E.P. Scarlett, and carpooled 3 days a week. Didn't know that the fantastic woman I was emailing who supervised our gate volunteers was Rachel's mom, Janine. So found another follower in my 'hood to be salt and light with! Loving the irony. We had a great time serving together.
Hi Debbie,
Kindergarten grad was today and it was a great event! The only thing missing was you! The kids did so well, said their memory verses, sang and did their dance. I was so happy to see Josh dancing and with a girl even!! How far he has come in this year. We thank you for a wonderful kindergarten year. It was so memorable and with Josh being our last, we were so glad that he had you as his teacher. The video was fantastic - Gerry and Kate did a great job and we are so thankful that they were able to do something so nice for us when we know how much you all are dealing with right now. It's so hard to believe this year has ended already, but I know we will always look back on this year as a really precious time. (Can you tell I'm sentimental today!) God Bless. We are praying for you and Sam.
Frances
I have lots of photos from the grad. If you'd like to see them, I could e-mail them to you.
Hi Debbie,
I just wanted to write and say thank you for being Micah's teacher this year. You taught him a lot this year and made him sit down and be quiet (which is hard to do,HAHA). Thanks for teaching him about God and the importance of following Him in our lives. Micah's favorite unit was when you taught them about bear's and he still talks about the bear rug and stories you told the class. You are a wonderful teacher and he was blessed to have you this year. Thanks for all of your hard work and loving all of your students wholeheartedly (had to include the Cedars theme there). We are praying for you and Sam and it is so special to read about how your relationship with each other is growing closer but more importantly you are growing closer to our Heavenly Father.
Sue Reimer

Hi Debbie,
Well before I know it, kindergarten is over. Wow!! Take in every moment. Kindergarten grad was great. Your family did a incredible job on the video, I know that is hours and hours of work. THANK YOU. We watched it over and over today. When Bethanie, saw you she yelled "there's Mrs. Goertzen, oh I miss her," then pretended to fake cry. What a goof. The dance at grad was so sweet. Bethanie danced with Lucas, I didn't know if I should take pictures of them, or of Frank and Parrish who were grinning watching there kids dance together. Such a special moment, two guys growing up playing hockey together and now their kids are square dancing together. Thanks Cedars for such a special memory. We pray for you and Sam every night. I was doing my devotions and there was an analogy that brought your family to my mind. It was a sea analogy, I know your family loves sailing. "If you believe in Jesus, you are not to spend all of your time in the calm waters just inside the harbor, full of joy, but always tied to the dock. You have to get out past the harbor into the great depthes of God, and begin to know and discern things for yourself." Well if you guys are not in the middle of the ocean, I don't know who is. God is your refuge and your strength. I pray that you not only know that, but feel it everyday. Thanks for giving us a precious year.
Love Lara Child
